In April, spring has arrived with milder temperatures and flowers in full bloom. Tourism slows in the Caribbean and travel to Europe hasn’t picked up yet, so airfare and hotel rates are quite affordable this time of the year.

1. Zurich (Switzerland)
|Average Temperature||60°F high; 42°F low|
|April Events||Sechselauten spring festival|
April in Zurich is officially the end of winter with Sechselauten. This spring festival features parades, parties and the burning of Boogg, a snowman-like creature. According to legend, the faster Boogg’s head bursts, the better summer will be.
While you’re there, explore the city by boat, check out the medieval buildings of Old Town, and get some late-season skiing in a few hours from Zurich.
2. Clearwater Beach, Florida (USA)
|Average Temperature||77°F high; 68°F low|
|April Events||Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival|
Clearwater Beach is a coastal town on the Gulf of Mexico. Its clear, warm water and soft, white sand on miles of shoreline makes it one of the top beaches in the United States.
Head to Pier 60 for nightly entertainment with food, concerts, street performers, artisans and special events. Check out the Clearwater Marine Aquarium which houses dolphins, pelicans, sea turtles, otters and sharks. Picnic at Sand Key Park where there are tables and grills, a dog park and a sea turtle nesting area.
There’s also the Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival, where sand sculptors from all over the world gather to create extraordinary sand sculptures and compete for the top prize. Live entertainment, demonstrations and fireworks round out the event.
3. Tel Aviv (Israel)
|Average Temperature||74°F high; 57°F low|
We like Tel Aviv in April because it’s comfortably warm, yet not quite peak season. And with the celebration of Passover, most of the city’s museums are free, including the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Design Museum Holon and the Yitzhak Rabin Center.
Israel’s Independence Day is also in April. If you’re lucky enough to be in Tel Aviv, the city comes alive with parties, performances, live music and fireworks.
We also recommend walking along the Tel Aviv Promenade, taking in the famous Bauhaus architecture, and visiting Carmel Market. Go to Jaffa in South Tel Aviv to explore the ancient port city, home to narrow windy streets filled with ancient buildings, restaurants, boutiques and a popular flea market. And, of course, you’ll want to make time to bask in the sun at one of Tel Aviv’s world famous beaches.
4. Boston, Massachusetts (USA)
|Average Temperature||57°F high; 41°F low|
|April Events||Boston International Film Festival |
April in Boston isn’t exactly warm, but the month is filled with fun events. Baseball fans, you won’t want to miss out on Fenway Park‘s home opener. Around mid-month is the Boston International Film Festival, featuring screenings and live events. Later in April is the oldest annual marathon in the world, Boston Marathon, and Patriot’s Day, a festival commemorating the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord.
We also recommend seeing the city on a Duck Tour, cruising the Public Garden lagoon in a swan boat, downing pints in a beer garden and day-tripping to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod.
5. Seville, Andalusia (Spain)
Not only are the temperatures throughout Andalusia pleasant in April, but the sweet fragrance of orange blossoms permeate the air, and there are plenty of reasons to celebrate with Holy Week and April Fair on the calendar.
Semana Santa, or Holy Week, in Seville has taken place since the 16th century. It features massive floats that are artistic representations of the stories of the Passion of Jesus Christ. The heavy floats wander through the city’s narrow streets for up to 12 hours, carried by devoted locals.
On the other hand, Feria de Abril – or April Fair – is all about food, fun and frivolity. The locals put on their best traditional dresses to watch the parades on horseback, the daily bullfights and the Sevillana traditional folk dance.
6. Washington, D.C. (USA)
|Average Temperature||67°F high; 44°F low|
|April Events||National Cherry Blossom Festival’s Petalpalooza|
Smithsonian Craft Show
D.C. Comedy Festival
We like Washington D.C. in April because it’s not yet high season and the weather is mild. Plus, there are plenty of events to enjoy.
Petalpalooza is part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival and it features a full day of live music, interactive art installations, a beer garden, family-friendly hands-on activities, fireworks and more.
The Smithsonian Craft Show spans four days and showcases the finest in American contemporary craft and design, including ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, mixed media and much more.
The D.C. Comedy Festival shines a light on a diverse line-up of comedians from across the country with open mics, dinners, showcases, headliners and brunch.
And finally, Filmfest D.C. lasts 11 days and features 80 films from 45 countries.
7. Istanbul (Turkey)
|Average Temperature||63°F high; 46°F low|
|April Events||International Istanbul Tulip Festival|
Istanbul weather in April is moderate, which is perfect for exploring the outdoor ancient sites. Plus, it’s shoulder season, so the hordes of tourists have not yet arrived and there’s plenty of hotel deals to take advantage of.
April is also when the International Istanbul Tulip Festival occurs, when millions of tulips are planted in the city’s parks, avenues, traffic roundabouts…just about anywhere open ground is available. We especially like the tulip display at Emirgan Park.
|Average Temperature||88°F high; 75°F low|
|April Events||Easter weekend celebrations|
April in Belize sees a decline in tourists as the temperatures rise in the United States, Canada and Europe. But with warm, sunny weather punctuated with quick bursts of passing showers, spring is one of the best times to visit this Central American country. You’ll also benefit from the price drops in airfare and hotels.
Belize has one of the most impressive reefs in the world, and they’re doing everything they can to protect it. Including banning the use of single-use plastics and offshore oil drilling. You’ll notice very little trash floating around as you dive the famous Blue Hole. Time your stay around the full moon, and you can snorkel or dive alongside whale sharks as they feed and migrate.
If you’re looking for a big party, head to Caye Caulker, Caye Ambergris or the Placencia peninsula with DJs, live music, cocktails and foam parties throughout the four-day celebration on Easter weekend.
9. Budapest (Hungary)
April brings mild weather and spring flowers, without the bus-tour crowds, to Eastern Europe. In Budapest, it’s the perfect time to admire the art nouveau architecture, visit the stunning thermal bath and spas, and relax at an outdoor cafe.
Budapest Spring Festival spans almost four weeks of April and is the largest and most prestigious cultural festival in Budapest with a series of opera, concert, ballet and theatrical performances. Choose from about 120 programs at around 40 venues, including public places, squares, parks and streets.
Budapest Art Week takes place during the spring festival and lets you visit approximately 100 exhibitions at around 75 venues with just one pass.
10. Bali (Indonesia)
|Average Temperature||81°F high; 35°F low|
|April Events||Kartini Day|
Ubud Food Festival
April is the end of the rainy season in Bali. In fact, you can expect near-perfect conditions with mostly sunny weather, not too windy at the coast, and clean beaches.
Bali is full of celebrations this month with the Ubud Food Festival (three days celebrating the country’s diverse cuisines and exciting gastronomic scene), Kartini Day (April 21, a celebration of the Indonesian hero of women empowerment) and Semarapura Festival (three days of the art, culture and tourism of Kabupaten Klungkung).
