The United Gateway℠ Card is the newest member of the United MileagePlus co-branded family of cards, joining the United℠ Explorer Card and the United Club℠ Infinite Card. For the first year of account opening, the card earns 3x on grocery store purchases up to $15k. The card also earns 2X miles at gas stations, local transit & commuting, and United purchases. For all other purchases, it earns 1x miles.
If you’re committed to flying United, you’ll want to consider adding this low-cost card to your wallet because it offers bonus miles on everyday purchases like gas stations and local transit and commuting.
The United Gateway℠ Card is issued by Chase Bank. Chase also offers great sign-up bonuses for their Checking/Savings accounts.

Need help meeting the spending requirement? Here are some ideas.
What Are MileagePlus Miles Worth?
Like many other frequent flyer programs, the value of your miles depends on how you use them. A MileagePlus mile can be worth as little as $0.005, or as much as $0.021. On average, we value each MileagePlus mile at around $0.014. Using this figure, the 30,000-mile bonus would be worth around $420.
You can redeem your MileagePlus miles for:
- Flights and upgrades with United Airlines and Star Alliance partners
- Travel, including hotel stays, car rentals and cruises
- Enhanced travel, like United Club membership, WiFi and more
- Gift cards
- Magazine and newspaper subscriptions
To get the most value for your miles, redeem them for flight and seat upgrades on United and Star Alliance partners. All other redemption options often end up with a per-mile value of less than $0.01.
And just FYI, your MileagePlus miles don’t expire as long as your account is open, so you can take your time and save your miles for the award of your dreams.
Replacing United TravelBank, the United Gateway℠ Card will be the only co-branded MileagePlus card that doesn’t charge an annual fee. It not only gives you bonus miles on United purchases, but also on a few everyday spending categories as well. MileagePlus miles have great flexibility, with the capacity to redeem with more than 35 partner airlines. However, you might find it lacking when it comes to airline-specific perks.
If you’re looking for more United-related freebies, check out the United℠ Explorer Card. You’ll get one free checked bag on United flights for you and a travel companion and two United Club one-time passes every year, along with 25% back on inflight purchases.
