The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is the best in class for grocery buyers and is one of the best cash-back cards available right now. There’s currently an offer for a $300 statement credit after you spend $3,000 in purchases on your new Card within the first 6 months. See all card bonus offers here.
This card offers 6% cash back on up to $6,000 per year in purchases at U.S. supermarkets and 3% cash-back at U.S. gas stations. New benefits for this card include 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming subscriptions and 3% cash back on transit (e.g. taxis/rideshare, parking, tolls, trains, buses and more). You’ll earn 1% cash back on everything else.
The plan fee for the first 12 months is $0 and will be 1.33% of each purchase amount moved into a plan based on various factors such as plan duration, the APR that would otherwise apply, and others.
Your annual fee for the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express will be $0 for your first year of Card Membership. After the first year, your annual fee will be $95. See Rates & Fees, Terms Apply.
With the expanded bonus rewards categories, the Blue Cash Preferred card is one of the best on the market. But, seek out another option if a good chunk of your spending doesn’t correlate well with this card’s bonus rewards categories.
The Blue Cash Preferred $150 Welcome Offer
With the Blue Cash Preferred Card from American Express, you get a $150 statement credit when you spend $3,000 in purchases within your first 6 months. The bonus is earned in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as a statement credit.
Meeting the $3,000 spending requirement should be fairly easy within the 6 month time frame, but here are some ideas if needed.
One of the most negative aspects of this card is the high annual fee (introductory annual fee of $0 the first year, then $95). If we look at what you would need to spend in order to break even, it equates to around $31 per week just on groceries. This figure is more than attainable even for those without families to shop for.
If your family spends a lot on gas, this is a great card to use. Spend $200 monthly on gas and you’ll earn around $72 annually.
If the annual fee is a real sticking point for you, then you might want to consider applying for the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express instead. This card has no annual fee but does offer a little less in terms of the cash back rates, offering 3% on U.S. supermarkets up to $6,000 annually. Two general cash back cards (no categories to keep up with) with no annual fee to consider are the Capital One® Quicksilver® Cash Rewards Credit Card and the Chase Freedom Unlimited®.
