Chase-Business-Checking-Bonus-Square-Banner

chase-total-checking-banner-300-2024

Periodically throughout the year Citibank will have new checking, savings and business account promotions for bonus cash.

The typical bonus amounts include $200, $300, $400, $500, $600, $700, $1000, $1500, $2000 and sometimes up to $5,000. While the Chase Bank bonuses are typically more popular, these offers from Citi are very competitive for people with the cash available to qualify for the bonus. This is because Direct Deposit is oftentimes not required.

You’ll find Citibank branches across the following states: CA, CT, DC, DE, FL, IL, MA, MD, NJ, NV, NY, PA, SD, TX and VA. Personal Checking and Savings offers appear to be available nationwide.

Citi Checking accounts have reportedly been some of the best for low-fee ATM usage overseas.

See the offers below.

More About Citi

  • Citibank’s Origins: Started back in 1812 as the City Bank of New York, it’s now the consumer-facing part of Citigroup, the U.S.’s third-largest financial powerhouse.

  • Branch Distribution: While they boast nearly 1,000 branches in the U.S., most are in big cities like New York, Chicago, LA, D.C., Miami, and San Fran.

  • Banking Strategy: Unlike the usual stand-alone checking and savings accounts, Citi bundles them. There’s a monthly fee, but it can be waived and covers both accounts.

  • Comparison with Other Banks: Citi doesnโ€™t really stand out in the crowd. They’ve got fewer branches than other national banks, and their rates are pretty standard.

  • High-Yield Savings: An exception is their Citi Accelerate Savings. It offers an APY that’s a cut above most big-name banks.

  • Pro Tip: To really get the most bang for your buck with Citi (or any big bank), keep an eye out for their frequent bonus offers.ย

Be Sure To Avoid The Monthly Fees

  • Maintenance Fees: Citi’s checking and savings accounts often come with monthly fees. However, ways to waive these charges are available, and the specifics differ per account.

  • Evaluate The Real Bonus Value: Always factor in these monthly fees when gauging the true worth of a Citi promotion or special offer.

  • Be Sure The Account Works For You: If you find it tough to meet the criteria to sidestep the fees, the Citi product might not be your best long-term choice.ย

Understanding Citibank Offers: Is There A Catch?

  • Don’t Rush: Spotting bonus cash for a new Citibank account might make you eager to jump in, but it’s crucial to take a step back and fully understand the terms.

  • Promotion Limitations: Like most banks, Citi has certain restrictions on their offers that might make you ineligible.ย

  • Eligibility Rules: For instance, Citi Priority, Citigold, and Citibank “New to Citi Checking” bonuses are not open to those who’ve had a Citi checking account within the last 6 months. Plus, you need to be at least 18 years old.

  • Understanding The Fee Structure: It’s also crucial to get a handle on the account’s fee structure. A sign-up bonus of $300 can quickly be offset by a $30 monthly fee.

  • Waiving Maintenance Fees: The good news is that many of these fees can be avoided if you meet certain conditions.

  • Digging Deeper: By clicking “full details” on any active offers, you can get the complete breakdown of the terms and fees for each promotion. Be sure to read this info before proceeding.

Citi Bonuses Tips & Tricks

When aiming for that tempting “free” cash from Citi, make sure you’re playing by the rules. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Citi Promo Offers:

    • Always initiate by clicking “Apply Now” from the specific offer’s landing page on Citi’s site.
    • If opening an account via phone, ensure you ask to be included in the offer; it’s not automatic.
    • A crucial reminder: signing up without following the proper procedure won’t get you the bonus, even if all other conditions are met.
  • Tiered Rewards:

    • The more you deposit, the bigger the reward.
    • It’s not a one-size-fits-all situation with Citi.ย
    • You usually have 20-30 days to reach your deposit target but watch out; dropping below your tier during the holding period (typically 60 days) reduces your bonus.
  • Customer Eligibility:

    • Most offers are for new accounts only.
    • Eligibility is based on “product categories” like “consumer checking account”. So, a Citigold Checking Account holder could still get bonuses for a CitiBusiness Streamlined Checking account, but not for another type of personal Citi checking account.
  • The Two-Year Rule:

    • Citi restricts welcome bonuses to once every two years per product category.
  • Watch Out for Clawbacks:

    • No early termination fees, but if you close your account before getting the bonus, itโ€™s forfeited.
    • Expect to stay with Citi roughly 6 months: 30 days to deposit, 60 days holding the balance, and a 90-day wait to get paid.
  • Tax Reminders:

    • Bonuses are taxable. Expect a 1099-INT form from Citi at year-end.

Bottom Line

Citi’s main office is in New York, and they’ve got around 2,600 branches globally, with about 1,000 of those in the U.S.

Plus, they’ve got over 72,000 ATMs where you don’t pay fees. So, accessing your money’s pretty straightforward.

While most people recognize Citi for their credit cards, they actually have a wide range of services, from regular banking to wealth management.

One great thing about Citibank is their frequent promotions. When you open a new account or get a credit card, there’s a good chance you’ll snag some bonus cash.ย

In regards to the citibank promo, I believe they are deliberately deceiving. I purposely decided to research banks that offers promo bonuses within 60 days not 90 days. Most of the bonuses are within 90 days. Within the bullets of the citibank promo it states maintain balance 60 days, receive $400. Not true at all. They weren’t up front like the other banks about it being 90 days but it is. That’s upsetting. I’m closing my account. I don’t like that.

This is my BAD experience with the Citi $200 bonus. I opened a checking account online in late June. Faxed Citi the documents they required. I couldn’t access my account on 7/21. When I called Citi on 7/24 I was told my account had been closed. (Why wasn’t I given this information when I was online on 7/21 ?) Citi sent me a letter noting they couldn’t verify my identity. I sent Citi a letter with Identifying documents, clearly ASKING FOR A RESPONSE as to what the problem was with my identification ? Citi DID NOT RESPOND! >>>I will not do business with Citi. I will take care of my financial needs with their competitors- in which I have accounts in good standing!<<<

do you have the print out/pdf file for the mentioned $200-$7000 Citi Savings Account offer that expired 9/30/2017? I opened the account on 9/22 but want to keep copy for proof since afraid I won’t get my bonus based on these reviews stating Citibank doesn’t always honor. I tried the link but it no longer works. Any help would be appreciated.

I’m 100% agreed with Rosa!!!! CitiBank offered all kinds of promotional cash credits for new checking/saving accounts but had all kinds of reasons to disqualify your account when the dates are matured. I opened a new online checking account with $300 or $500 cash credit 6 months ago. The requirements were very simple and easy, 1) the required amount in the account for 90 days 2) enroll paperless statement. For some reason, I couldn’t transfer my money from WellsFargo to CitiBank online account. I went to the branch in Simi Valley to deposit, Maaz, personal banker helped me that day. He told me the promotional cash credit requirements and I did exactly what I was told. Six months later, I see no promotional cash credit deposit in my account. First, I called the on-line representatives for answer, I was told all kinds of reasons why my account did not meet the requirement. Then I went to branch to find out what’s going on…. and have been told that my deposit was made after the expiration date!!!! Which I was not told when I deposited my money, this was a LAME excuse. What is the point going to the branch for a live banker to help you but ended up having the worst experience . My first time banking with CitiBank and is now my last time, will close the account very soon!

I bank with Bank of America and Chase. I am not the type to write reviews either, but Citi has done it for me. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER. Consistently incompetent employees that work here. I don’t know how many hours I spent over the phone wasting my time. Called in 10 different times. All 10 times, I had employees not resolving my issue AND making it very cumbersome for me during the process of it all.

Never had this problem with Chase. I am not in any way affiliated with Chase, but the service and quality of at Citi is appallingly consistently horrific in comparison. STAY AWAY.

Also, on a side note, they require you to do a direct deposit of some sort to receive a $300 or $500 bonus with the requirement being that you need to do this within 30 days of account opening. First of all, they send you a letter requesting other additional information about you. As a result, after sending in account consent form and W-9 form, your employers are never going to change your direct deposit information in time to meet the 30 day deadline.

Don’t waste your time with this bank. Your time and energy is much more valuable than this…

Rosa- I suggest setting a limit in how many times you try to resolve a problem. I generally give a company 4 tries to take care of an issue. 1. 2 times with Customer Service. I get the name of the person I’m speaking to and document the time and date of the call. If I call back I pass on the information from the previous call. 2. The 3rd try I insist that I be given a Supervisor. I state that I’m not happy and that this 3rd time I’ve attempted to get this taken care of. I say as a point of information If this is not taken care I will be contacting the Chief Executive Officer. Personally, I don’t want to be seen as making a threat. If I don’t have the C.E.O.’s name I get it as well as the C.E.O.’s phone number, e-mail, and snail mail address. I might also state that I will file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau to be handled by the
C.E.O. ( A company wouldn’t let an employee make the same mistake 10 times before the employee was fired or reassigned.. A company doesn’t get unlimited times to satisfy a customer!!!)

I have the same issue – opened a $400 promo for maintaining $10K balance for 90 days.
It sticks in my mind, because ….I compared to prevailing ones and registered that it was a “great” deal.

Anyway, it is 130 days and no money back.

Called customer service; was transferred to three different associates who said they cannot handle this.
The last one took down all the details and filed a case # – youll love this – it is a 22 digit case # !!!

Interestingly the same promo code is used to run different promo parameters at different time periods – I have never seen anything as incompetent as this, particularly from a bank.

I can go on & on about poor banking practices…. it is quite appalling that this bank can keep anything straight with their customers.

I have the same problem with CitiBank. They offered a $500 bonus with my savings account in April 2016 and I never received it. I called the bank and they are trying not to pay it. If not resolved, I will take it to the Senate Banking Committee as others have indicated. Don’t let them cheat you out of your money.

Take them to court. They will be contacting you as soon as you do to settle the case and you will get your money. Of course they will likely close your account afterwards.

send your complaints to the senate banking committee while the heat is on.
Wells Fargo is being grilled for deceit and fraud. Citi Bank owes me 500.00
for a well documented promo. It was due August 5th, now Sept. 20th. and all
I get from the branch is verbal diarrhea ! Scam, Fraud and deceit…They should
all go to jail and be closed down.

Several calls and e-mails to CitiGold CS with confirmation that points were credited to my account earlier in 07/16. Still waiting for those points after being told it would take a) 5 business days, b) 1-2 months, c) after my next statement. Not much hope at this point.

I can understand that Dan. It’s just part of the process for these bonuses. Banks want a long-term customer, we want to take advantage. You win some and you lose some. Good news is, if you’re on top of the Monthly Fee requirements, it only costs us some time.

Unlikely in my opinion, but not unheard of. I’d go for the $400 offer first for sure because the 50K TY points offer is targeted.

I completed the signup offers of 40k citi points, spoke to many reps who all confirmed I would receive the points. However, I recently got an email saying I was not in the targeted market (Pittsburgh) and wouldn’t receive the signup bonus despite the code and completion of the required steps. Very disappointing, anything else I can do?

Hmmmm, I think you should print the offer page out and show the rep if you have a branch nearby. If that’s not an option, let another rep know the offer page doesn’t state a promo code is required. Sorry I can’t be of more help!
