Chase “Pay Yourself Back” categories for the fourth quarter of 2023 have been revealed. See below for more details.
- Update 10/3/2023: Categories have been extended through 12/31/23.
- Update 6/7/2023: Chase is displaying the Chase Sapphire Reserve categories as Gas/Grocery, which will continue until September 30. This extension means the categories will remain the same for the third quarter of 2023.
- Chase has recently disclosed the Pay Yourself Back categories, which are currently valid until March 31, 2023. The validity has now been extended until June 30, 2023 and September 30, 2023.
- Update 3/16/2023: Chase Saphire Reserve pay-yourself-back benefits at 25% more value extended through 6/30/23.

“Pay Yourself Back” is a feature of several Chase credit cards that allows cardholders to use their Chase points to pay for everyday costs. You can redeem Ultimate Rewards points for statement credits on eligible purchases, including groceries and dining. Potentially, you can get 25% to 50% more value by using your points to redeem for your everyday purchases.
Here are the categories for the fourth quarter of 2023:
- Chase Sapphire Reserve
- Grocery Stores 1.25 cents per point
- Gas Stations 1.25 cents per point
- Annual Fee 1.25 cents per point
- Select charities 1.50 cents per point, valid through 12/31/23
- Chase Sapphire Preferred
- Points can be redeemed at 25% more for qualifying Charities through 12/31/2023
- Chase Ink Business Preferred
- Points can be redeemed at 25% more for qualifying Charities through 12/31/2023
Points can be redeemed for 25% more on business expenses related to internet, cable, phone services and shipping.
- Chase Ink Business Cash and Chase Ink Unlimited
Points can be redeemed for 10% more on internet, cable, phone services and shipping.- Points can be redeemed at 25% more for qualifying Charities through 12/31/2023
- Chase Freedom Flex and Freedom Unlimited
- Points can be redeemed for 25% more when donating to select charitable organizations
Bottom Line
This program has been devalued significantly.
Chase Sapphire Preferred and Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders use to be able to get 1.5 cents when redeeming through PYB for most categories (50% more value) but now that has been reduced to 25%-50% for charitable donations only.
