When dealing with cryptocurrency security, it’s important to have custody of your own private keys. After all, the only way to be sure you own your assets and won’t lose them if your exchange goes bankrupt is to keep your own keys.
Cold storage crypto wallets like Arculus meet the need for security and control. It’s one of the best options on the market if you want a crypto hardware wallet that is easy to use and secure. And it works a little bit differently than most hardware wallets you’re probably used to (e.g. Ledger, Trezor).
Our review of the Arculus wallet explains how it works, what its pros and cons are, and how you can decide if it’s right for you.
TRENDING DEAL:
What Is Arculus?
Arculus is a cold storage cryptocurrency wallet, which means it’s a platform that does not connect to the internet. Anyone who wants access to your Arculus wallet’s cryptocurrency will need your physical Arculus Key™ Card. Without the card, your currency is almost impossible to get to.
The front of the card is made of stainless steel and has the Arculus logo on it. It is the same size and shape as a normal credit card or ID. The back is made of plastic, which lets the NFC signal from your phone pass through when the card is near it.
It’s as thin as a credit card and can be kept safe anywhere you see fit, at home or in your wallet. How often you plan to use your crypto will likely determine where you keep the card.
Arculus is Web3-enabled and lets you store crypto safely and store and manage non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
CompoSecure, the company that developed Arculus, makes secure payment solutions and metal payment cards for big banks. CompoSecure developed Arculus when it realized that crypto investors needed a hardware wallet that was easy to use, worked well and most importantly, was secure.
Arculus doesn’t use Bluetooth, WiFi, or USB/cord connections like many other hardware wallets do. Instead, it just uses a key card. It’s a safe and stylish way to keep your digital belongings safe. And most importantly, Arculus puts your own private keys in your hands.
Once your account is all set up, you can buy, sell, and send cryptocurrencies whenever you want. Enter the wallet address or scan the QR code of the account you want to send or receive cryptocurrency from.
Arculus has support for major currencies like Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, and XRP. The Arculus wallet can be used with a total of 40 different cryptocurrencies (list below).
You can buy major coins like Ethereum and Bitcoin through the Arculus Wallet™ App, but the transactions are handled by liquidity partners Simplex and Changelly. Once you buy crypto through these partners, it goes straight to your Arculus wallet. Arculus doesn’t charge any fees for these transactions, but the liquidity partners do.
If you already have crypto in a different wallet or exchange, like Coinbase or Metamask, you can just transfer it to your Arculus account. However, there will be a cross-platform fee for each transaction, which is a percentage fee paid to the crypto miners who process the transaction. Arculus doesn’t charge any fees, as these fees go to the miners.

Arculus Security
Arculus is different because it combines the ease of use of a tap-to-transact card with the safety of a cold storage wallet. There are other cold storage wallets on the market, but most of them are harder to use because they have cables, small screens, and physical buttons.
The good thing about a cold storage wallet is that it isn’t online, so it can’t be hacked via the internet. On the other hand, cloud-based hot wallets are another popular way to store crypto. Metamask, Electrum, and the Coinbase Wallet are all examples of hot wallets. Even though these platforms have protections against hackers, they are still online, and anything in the cloud is theoretically always at risk of security breaches that users can’t stop. With a cold storage wallet, the only risk is if a user gets phished/scammed out of their recovery phrase.
With Arculus, your private keys are stored on the card itself, not on your phone or in the cloud. You will see the secret code when you set up the card initially and it will never be shown again.
You have to unlock your phone and then use your six-digit passcode to log in to the Arculus app. So, for someone to get access to your digital assets, you would have to physically let them in by unlocking your phone, tapping your physical card, and entering your Arculus passcode.
Unlike anything in the cloud, the three-factor authentication method makes it impossible to hack the card from afar, since the card, the unlocked phone (with your biometric, such as fingerprint or facial recognition), and a password all have to be available at the same time. The phone app is really just a way to access the card remotely; the information is always stored on the card. When you close the app, the device can no longer access your funds.
Arculus doesn’t store any personal information about its users on its own servers. This is another way that it protects its users. This means that there is no way to find out who you are through your Arculus account.
You also don’t have to worry if you lose or damage the tough metal card. You can restore your access to your assets by buying a new Arculus Key Card and restoring your wallet to your new Card by entering your secret recovery phrase at set up.

Best Arculus Benefits & Features
The main reasons to use Arculus instead of other hardware wallets are its ease of use and security. At a reasonable price, you can get a hardware wallet that is very safe and doesn’t have any features that are too hard to use.
NFC. Near-field communication (NFC) is used to facilitate one of the three factors of authentication when you tap your Arculus Key Card to your phone. This is the same technology that Google Pay and Apple Pay use for tap-to-pay. It also means that the hardware is less likely to fail, since it doesn’t need Bluetooth or WiFi.
Own your private keys. Your private keys can only be found on your key card. They aren’t stored on your phone, and Arculus doesn’t have access to your keys either. If you want full control over your crypto, you need to be in charge of your own private keys.
Three-Factor Authentication. Arculus has apps for both Android and iOS that let you see and manage your crypto and NFTs. To unlock the app and access your funds you have to go through Acrulus’ three-factor authentication process:
- Biometric Lock: To unlock your phone, you have to enter your passcode, use facial recognition, or scan your fingerprint – depending on your phone model.
- Numeric Pin: Once you’ve unlocked your phone, Arculus will ask you for a six-digit pin that you set up when you first set up your card.
- Arculus Key Card: To finish the three-factor authentication process, you tap your key card to the back of your phone. This lets you use the Arculus mobile app to buy, sell, swap, and manage your crypto and NFTs.
There’s very little risk that someone will be able to steal your crypto. Even if you lose both your phone and your key card, the person who finds them will need to know your six-digit Arculus app PIN and phone unlocking details.
NFT & DeFi Integrations. Arculus has support for NFTs and integration with WalletConnect. This lets you store, view, and manage your NFTs right in the app. You can also connect to NFT markets like OpenSea and SuperRare.

How Much Does Arculus Cost?
The price of the Arculus Key Card is $99, and the app for it is free. This is competitive with other popular hardware wallets like Trezor and Ledger. But, there is very little chance that the Arculus card hardware will fail. Other hardware wallets have screens, charging ports, and other parts that could break.

Who Is The Arculus Card For?
Arculus is one of many cold storage options for people who want to control their crypto securely. It comes with a sleek metal card, a polished app, and the promise that your digital assets will be safe.
The hardware is good, but currently the amount of cryptocurrencies supported isn’t as much as top competitors.
The app looks good and works well. It’s easy to move crypto into and out of your wallet, and not having a cold storage wallet is much riskier.
Arculus is for you if you want a crypto hardware wallet that is as easy to use as possible. But if you want more crypto support and more trading features, there may be other options that are better.
Ledger. Ledger is one of the most popular hardware wallets for storing cryptocurrencies. Its main benefit is that it works with more than 1,000 different cryptocurrencies and tokens. Also, with Ledger Live, you can buy and sell cryptocurrencies and even stake certain coins to earn passive income right from your wallet.
Trezor. Trezor is another popular hardware wallet. The Trezor wallet, unlike the Arculus wallet, is a USB device. It supports more than 1,000 cryptocurrencies and tokens. With the wallet’s desktop and browser app, Trezor Suite, you can buy, sell, and spend your cryptocurrency. But Trezor doesn’t support NFTs out of the box. Instead, you have to link it to a software wallet from a third party, like MetaMask.

Bottom Line
There are a lot of stories in the news about new crypto users whose investments were stolen, either because they didn’t know what they were doing or because they were scammed. A cold storage wallet won’t stop all types of theft from happening, but it can help with a lot.
The Arculus card is a solid cold wallet option that you can use with your smartphone. It keeps your private keys safe.
With Arculus, you can store your crypto and NFTs securely. It will only get better as it adds support for more cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies. In the end, if you have a lot of crypto in a software wallet or exchange, you should think about switching to a cold wallet like Arculus.
