One big rule with Wells Fargo credit cards is that you can only get one welcome offer from any of them once every 15 months.
Wells Fargo only has a few credit cards, but the ones it does have are some of the best available. If you want to apply for a Wells Fargo credit card, make sure you know what they need from you first. This will give you a better chance of being approved.
Update 11/11/2022: Before, you could only get one Wells Fargo card every 15 months. Now, you can get one every 6 months. This is true for all personal Wells Fargo cards once every six months. “If you’ve opened a Wells Fargo credit card in the last six months, you might not be able to get a second one”.
Wells Fargo Application Rules
Wells Fargo has one big rule that applies to all of its credit cards: every 15 months, you can only get one welcome offer from any of them.
Welcome offers are special deals that apply during the first few weeks or months of getting a card.
- Sign-up bonuses
- 0% introductory APR (or any special APR offer during an intro period)
- Fee discounts
- If you have a Wells Fargo credit card and get a welcome offer, you can’t get another one for 15 months. Even if the offers are different, it doesn’t matter. For example, if you got a card with a sign-up bonus, you wouldn’t qualify for another card’s 0% intro APR until 15 months had elapsed.
Even if you close the first card, this rule still applies, so you can’t do that as a way to get around it.
Wells Fargo has added language to their credit card applications that makes it clear that some people can’t get them. You can find the following in the terms and conditions:
“If you opened a Wells Fargo credit card within the last 15 months, you will not qualify for the introductory rate(s), fees and bonus offers.”
And:
“If you opened a Wells Fargo credit card account in the last 15 months from the date of this application, you won’t be eligible for the introductory APR(s) or bonus rewards offers until the first day of the month after the 15-month anniversary.”
How Strict Is This Rule?
It looks like this rule is strictly enforced per reports by cardholders.
This language is in the small print on all Wells Fargo cards.
What If You Don’t Meet The Wells Fargo Card Requirements
When you want to get a Wells Fargo credit card, one of the most important things to look at is your credit score. If your credit score is good, you have a much better chance. If your credit isn’t quite good enough yet, here are some ways to get there:
- Pay on time for everything: Your credit score is most affected by how you’ve paid your bills in the past. When you pay a loan or credit card bill on time, it’s good for your credit.
- Reduce credit card debt: Another important part of your credit score is the amount you owe. Your credit utilization ratio, or the ratio of your balances to your credit limits, can be hurt by having a lot of debt on your credit cards.
- Check your credit report: Online, at AnnualCreditReport.com, you can ask for your credit reports, which you should do because mistakes could hurt your credit. By law, each credit bureau must give you one free report per year.
- If you don’t have any credit cards yet, you may have a thin credit history, which means there isn’t enough information to give you a credit score. If that’s the case, you might want to look into starter credit cards made for people with no credit history. You can use one of these cards to build your credit until your score is high enough to get the Wells Fargo card you want.
