The Starbucks Rewards Visa card is handing out 4,500 bonus Stars as an introductory offer. To qualify, charge at least $500 to your card within the first 3 months of opening your account (ways to meet this spending requirement). You can redeem 125 Stars for a free food or drink item, so that bonus is worth 36 goodies. Compare this with other top card bonuses here.
The process of earning bonus Stars is a bit confusing. To earn the maximum 3 Stars per dollar spent, you’ll need to load money onto your Starbucks membership card by using your Starbucks Rewards Visa card. Then, when you’re at a Starbucks, pay from your Starbucks membership card. Not from your Starbucks Rewards Visa card. Every $1 that you load onto your Starbucks membership card is prepayment that can be applied to Starbucks purchases. You’ll also get 300 bonus Stars the first time you load your Starbucks membership card with your Starbucks Rewards Visa card using the Starbucks app. That’s enough for 2 food or drink items.
The complex rewards structure is a turn off if you want simple rewards. What’s more, your points expire relatively quickly – in 6 months time. Plus, there’s a $49 annual fee (waived 1st year), which can seem a bit odd for a cafe-branded credit card.
This is definitely a card for Starbucks lovers only. For casual visitors, stick to a general cash back card without an annual fee, or a top travel rewards card with a slightly higher fee.
*The Starbucks Rewards Visa card is issued by Chase Bank. Chase Bank offers great sign-up bonuses for its Checking/Savings accounts.
