H&R Block helps you prepare your taxes at an affordable price. While most clients primarily use the software, you can also walk into any one of H&R Block’s 12,000 offices to get a face-to-face consultation. In a market saturated with online tax prep services, the company’s in-person feature is what sets it apart.

H&R Block Tax Support
All H&R Block packages offers access to the company’s army of human tax professionals at 12,000 offices worldwide. Although this feature isn’t free, it’s reassuring to know you can get in-person help if you need it.
Ask a Tax Pro. This add-on service lets you chat with a tax expert with on-demand and unlimited access. You can talk on the phone, or use a mobile or tablet to share your screen during your session.
Tax Pro Review. Check for accuracy and any missed deductions or credits by getting this one-on-one review by a tax professional of your entire return. The review will be completed in three days, and the tax expert can even sign and e-file the return on your behalf.
Although not all of H&R Block tax experts are enrolled agents or CPAs, they do go through 60+ hours of initial training, plus an additional 30+ hours of training every year to prepare for the tax season.
H&R Block Audit Support
H&R Block users can purchase Worry-Free Audit Support, which connects you with an Enrolled Agent who will help guide you through an audit. The cost is $19.99 and includes audit preparation, IRS correspondence management and in-person audit representation.
H&R Block Tax Refund Options
No matter how you file your taxes, you can choose to receive your refund via:
- A direct deposit to a bank account (fastest option)
- An H&R Block Emerald prepaid debit Mastercard
- A paper check
- Next year’s taxes
- U.S. Savings Bonds purchases
- Amazon gift card (5% bonus)
The most lucrative way to receive your refund is by loading the amount to an Amazon gift card. You’ll get a 5% bonus on your refund this way. Choose to load your full refund, or just part of it. So for a $1,000 refund, you’ll be getting a total of $1,050.
H&R Block vs. TurboTax
Owned by Intuit, TurboTax (see TurboTax promotions here) is another tax prep option that offers step-by-step guidance while you navigate its user-friendly software. It’s perhaps H&R Block’s biggest competitor. Let’s compare and contrast the two services below.
Cost. Like H&R Block, TurboTax offers different packages:
|FILING OPTION||H&R BLOCK||TURBOTAX|
Free Option. Both H&R Block and TurboTax offer a free option, but the H&R Block package covers more forms and schedules and allows you to file multiple state returns for free. In contrast, the TurboTax free option includes only one free state return.
Tax Experts. While TurboTax doesn’t have any brick-and-mortar locations like H&R Block, it does give clients access to tax experts – CPAs and EAs) – for an additional fee. As mentioned before, H&R Block provides tax pro assistance – online, via phone and in person.
Ease of Use. TurboTax wins the competition here, whether your experience is on a desktop, tablet or smartphone. TurboTax uses an interview style to navigate you through the filing process. The verbiage is simple and straightforward, without any complicated tax jargon. H&R Block is user-friendly as well, but every once in awhile you might come across an unclear question or explanation.
Although it might not quite measure up to TurboTax, H&R Block stands out from the crowd by offering in-person access to a tax expert, if you need one. Because of this, we recommend H&R Block for anyone who is attempting to do their own taxes for the first time, or for anyone who wants a tax pro to fall back on.
Plus, when you choose to load your tax refund onto an Amazon gift card, you’ll get a 5% bonus.
